What Pool Cleaners Are the Best?

Choosing the best pool cleaner can be a challenge. With so many options on the market it’s a matter of deciding whether robotic, suction, or in-floor pool cleaning systems are the best.

No matter what type of swimming pool you install – there’s always 1 task that can’t be avoided – someone, or something needs to clean it. With so many options currently on the market – let us help you make a choice to suit your individual needs.

Let us set the scene and paint a picture for you:

“I’ve come to clean zeeee pool” Enter the guy with the 70’s moustache, standing on the side of your new concrete swimming pool, sweeping the net back and forth in his sequined G string. (It might not happen like this in real life) but if paying someone to come and regularly clean your pool is not an outlay you are wanting to pay for, we’ve put together some options to help keep your new swimming pool sparking clean, all year round.

Manual brushing

Remove the G-string clad pool cleaner from the scene and take charge of the cleaning yourself – or wear it – we don’t judge! As part of your handover kit, Bali Pools supplies a net and brush with a telescopic pole. No matter what cleaner you opt for, we recommend manually brushing your pool once per day for the first week or so to help remove any loose pebbles and dust for your filter to pick up and clean.

Manually brushing your pool is precise, you lead the way. You can clean those hard-to-reach places where other cleaners might not reach. However, it’s time consuming – and we believe that time could be better spent enjoying your new swimming pool with family and friends.

Suction cleaners

As the name suggests, a suction cleaner will suck up leaves, debris and grime from the walls and floor in your pool. The cleaner attaches with a hose to your current filtration system via the skimmer box. They’re relatively easy to install and a cheaper option than some other cleaners on the market.

A suction cleaner will fill your skimmer box with the debris collected – while this type of cleaner is working, the skimmer box does not operate to clean the top surface of the pool, so leaves and bugs are not effectively removed by a suction cleaner unless they are at the bottom. Suction cleaners will work well if your filtration system is in good order.

There are 2 types of suction cleaners: Inertia driven: Think “creepy crawly”. These work well in curved pools with no sharp corners; however, they are random in their movement with no predetermined pattern (as a child I always imagined they were going to suck me up when they were in the pool) – and geared suction, these are similar to a robotic cleaner with wheels and tracks, they are known for getting into tight corners. They do require more effort than newer options on the market as they need to be connected and disconnected from your filter each time, to avoid long term damage to your pools filter.

Pressure cleaners

A lesser-known cleaning option that we’re comfortable enough to admit we don’t know a whole lot about (bless Google for its knowledge). Pressure cleaners are becoming less common now that robotic cleaners are around. While they offer a more powerful clean than suction cleaners, they do require a booster pump. They are connected via a separate hose connected to pool wall. Pressure cleaners are known for collecting fine debris and particles due to the style of cleaner. If there is not one already installed, we believe there are much better options available on the market now.

Robotic Cleaners

The most popular type of swimming pool cleaner. While they’re a little more expensive than older style suction pool cleaners and they do have some downsides, we believe the benefits outweighs the costs.

Robotic pool cleaners are automatic, you simply pop it in your pool, turn it on and let the cleaner do the hard work for you. The 2 robotic cleaners we recommend both clean all spaces of the pool, floors, walls, steps and waterline – no more dirty ‘bath ring’ or debris sitting on the waterline of your pool. The debris that the cleaner collects is trapped in the cleaner’s, easy to access, separate filtration basket. This means less blockages than suction cleaners.

Some newer models can be programmed from an app if you’re away for extended times, pop it in the pool, let it do its thing and come home to a sparkling clean pool.

Robotic cleaners do require an electrical supply, so will need a power point installed close to the pool, and depending on the location of the power supply, you may need to purchase a longer hose to reach all areas of your pool – we recommend getting a swivel cable adaptor to avoid less tangling. Robotic pool cleaners also are not great on curved pools. However, this is only a small design flaw.

In-floor Pool Cleaning Systems

In-floor pool cleaning is the best of the best!

When installing your new concrete swimming pool – talk to us about installing an in-floor pool cleaning system – your pool will clean itself through a patented design of strategically placed cleaning jets on steps, walls and along the floor, they push the debris to a central ‘collection zone’ at the deep end of your pool. This process is continual, the debris is then collected in a containment canister installed at the side of your pool, meaning your swimming pool is always more than 99% clean and ready for use. While this option may seem to be a costly one in the beginning, the long-term benefits far outweigh this outlay. In floor cleaning systems evenly circulates water throughout every inch of your concrete swimming pool, with studies showing that you can expect to save on chemicals and heating loss for the entire life of your pool. You also do not have manually enter or remove the cleaner from the pool.
